“Ranzhiwu” is a Japanese-style yakiniku izakaya located in Parkview Green, Northeast Fourth Ring Road, Beijing. Situated on the northwest corner of a ground-floor office building, it lies in the heart of the bustling Chaoyang district yet enjoys a relatively quiet setting. Most passersby in the area are busy office workers on the go.

The architect aimed to move beyond the constraints of traditional interior design and approached the project through the lens of architectural typology. The entire concept revolves around the idea of a “micro-city”—scaling down the spatial complexity and dynamics of urban architecture into an interior environment to create a rich and layered spatial experience.

Even within the relatively open space of Yakiya, the micro-city concept is carried through. We sought to bring the experience of the urban outdoors into the interior. In the city, the tension and spatial relationships between buildings shape human behaviors and interactions. If we translate those dynamics into an interior setting, it may spark surprising responses.

We fragmented and materialized various stages of food preparation into distinct booth-like units—like mini street stalls—bringing the richness of a streetscape into the restaurant and transforming it into the dining backdrop.

Two full-height glass curtain walls play different roles by day and night. During the day, they bring the outside in, integrating views of the seasonal garden into the restaurant. At night, they project the inside out, turning the restaurant interior into a visual stage that draws attention from outside and invites passersby in. This shift creates a varied dining atmosphere throughout the day.

Private dining rooms, imagined as “micro-architectures,” are scattered around the corners of the main hall. When the curtains are drawn, they become independent “tents”; when opened, they transform into open “market stalls.” These structures not only enhance the dining experience but also add depth and interactivity to the overall spatial environment.
