U-DING HOTPOT WANGJING | SPACE CANTEEN

2021 | China Beijing Wangjing

This is the fourth store commissioned by U-DING to AND lab as part of their brand identity upgrade. It is located in Shoukai Square, Wangjing.

Prior to this store, AND lab designed U-DING’s smart restaurant located in Xidan. The Xidan smart store features robotic chef arms developed and customized by Siemens for U-DING, creating a fully automated, unmanned kitchen.

At that time, we conceptualized the image as a cafeteria inside a space station—after all, U-DING is fundamentally a fast-food brand.

Continuing this future space-cafeteria concept, we've set the Wangjing store similarly within a spacecraft dining hall scenario.

Unlike the Xidan store, however, the Wangjing location does not feature automated robotic equipment but rather a conventional kitchen.

Here, instead of positioning the kitchen in a corner or along a wall, we placed it directly in the center of the restaurant as an island, creating a natural circular flow.

The Wangjing store adopts a self-service model, with the self-selection area wrapping around the central kitchen island.

The central kitchen acts as the infrastructural core, supporting the operational needs of the store.

The shopping mall’s ceiling height is notably higher than average, which we've leveraged into an advantage by using the additional height to create a secondary "upper-level" setting.

This upper-level space imagines a scene where animals are artificially cultivated within the spacecraft to provide ingredients.
